Flemington rejects automated red-light ticketing bonanza; won't irk visitors

FLEMINGTON — Borough officials decided against installing a red light camera at the intersection of Route 202-31 and Reaville Avenue.

Councilman Marc Hain said council members discussed the issue at the governing body’s Dec. 12 meeting, during which several members of the public spoke against the idea, saying that using the automated equipment to ticket drivers running red lights would discourage people from coming to visit, and especially shop in Flemington.

“Numerous residents who had voiced their opinion on it felt that we did not need it,” Hain said.

Borough Council’s decision came despite reports of substantial revenues being generated by red light cameras already in place at two intersections in Pohatcong Township in Warren County. During the first six weeks the cameras were operational in October in November of 2011, about 2,500 tickets were reportedly issued. Each violation comes with an $85 fine.
Besides issuing tickets for running red lights, the equipment can also detect vehicles failing to make a full stop at the designated striped line before making a right turn on red. The equipment in Pohatcong also issues tickets for that violation.

The state’s five-year red light camera pilot program is slated for expiration this year. Flemington, for now at least, will not be among the municipalities participating.
