Ethics Complaint Filed Against Red-Light Camera Committee

Some drastic changes could be in store for the red-light cameras in Albuquerque.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- One City Council member said an election group in support of Albuquerque’s red-light cameras is blatantly violating the law.

The issue will go in front of voters in early October.

City Council Member Dan Lewis filed a formal complaint with the city clerk’s office. Lewis said it’s high time the public knows who is behind the campaign to keep the cameras turned on.

Lewis said RedFlex, the operator of Albuquerque’s red-light cameras, donated $90,000 to Safe Roads ABQ – a measure finance committee aimed at keeping the cameras on.

RedFlex has made $17 million since the cameras first turned on in 2005, Lewis said.

“Why wouldn't they invest $90,000 if they knew they could get $17 million back,” Lewis said.

Because $90,000 is nearly all of the donations the committee raked in, technically, RedFlex should be part of the committee’s formal name, according to Lewis. Lewis said the committee failed to properly file its mailings and advertisements, which is another requirement of city election law.

“The fact is they already violated it, and are violation of the law,” Lewis said.

Next Tuesday, voters will voice their opinion on the program. Even though the public vote is just an advisory, the majority of the City Council said they will vote as the public goes.

Safe Roads Albuquerque released a statement and receipts from the clerk’s office, showing that they plan to amend their name and they’ve filed the necessary campaign paperwork. The compliance happened this week.

Lewis said RedFlex took action because he planned on filing a complaint. On Friday, the ethics board is expected to address Lewis’ complaint.
