Email From A Professional Driver About red light Cameras

I have been a professional driver for many years and have witnessed these red light cameras in action. I can tell you from first hand experience that the lights are programmed to change at different intervals throughout the day, never the same timing and I personally, have nearly lost control trying to stop before the white line numerous times, in my 16,000 pound truck. The light changes way to fast from yellow to red to stop safely, especially in the rain. If you need me as a first hand witness, let me know. I sent an email last year, to the Orange County Traffic control center to report a left arrow light at John Young and Oakridge rd. I was the second car in line. As soon as the arrow turned green, the car accelerated and I following behind, watched the light turn red before the driver entered the intersection and he and I both ran the light. There was no way I could stop because I was already in the intersection. We both would have been be mailed a ticket if the cameras were working at that time. At first, OCTC told me the lights were programmed correctly but after my request to check it out, they did. I received an email later in the week and was informed that I was correct and they fixed the problem. People are being sent tickets for crossing the white line and still stopping. I am here to tell you that the distance of travel at these 8 lane intersections, is too great to stop safely before the light turns to red and too long to clear the intersection before the camera captures the driver. It is also my understanding that fatal, t-bone accidents have decreased but the total number of rear end crashes have drastically increased throughout the country at these traffic controlled intersections. IF THEY WANT TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS, GO BACK TO THE WAY IT USED TO BE. EXTEND THE TIME FROM YELLOW TO RED AND DELAY THE CROSS TRAFFIC LIGHTS FOR TWO OR THREE SECONDS BEFORE IT TURNS GREEN. THIS WILL LOWER THE ACCIDENT RATES AND THIS ILLEGAL PRACTICE WILL CEASE.  Sincerely, Michael Wiggs
