DALLAS — A newspaper survey of a dozen North Texas cities found that nearly 30 percent of the more than 1.3 million red-light camera violations issued from 2008 until 2010 went unpaid.

The violations don't go on driving records, and the penalties cannot be reported to a credit bureau. Many drivers simply throw their red-light camera tickets into the trash and get away with it.

The survey by The Dallas Morning News found that, at $75 a ticket, plus a $25 late fee, nearly $30 million in fines went unclaimed (http://www.dallasnews.com/news/transportation/20111014-in-dallas-area-nearly-a-third-of-red-light-camera-tickets-are-going-unpaid.ece?action=reregister ).

Grand Prairie police spokesman Eric Hansen, echoing the opinion of other law-enforcement agencies, said if people do not mind being badgered by a bill collector, "there's not a lot we can do."

Not Paying
written by 206driver , December 04, 2011

While visting the fair city of Arlington, I made a right turn on red at 4am, after coming to an "almost" complete stop. Did a police officer "really: review this and decide it was a ticketable offense". Give me a break. No other cars visible on the road in any direction. after I got home, a month or so later a "notice" arrived asking me to pay up. This ticket was obviously not for safety reasons just revenue. I am out of state, can't afford to come back for their "hearing", so where are my due process rights, even in a "civil matter"?? They will not be paid and I will not stay in Arlington Texas next time on business.
