Could the Red-Light Camera Issue Cost Parker the Re-Election?
Anti camera activists plan to mobilize thousands to stop Mayor Annise Parker from being re-elected.

At a press conference following yesterday's city council meeting, Houston Mayor Annise Parker said that she has every intention on turning off the city's red light cameras.

"I don’t know what the perception problem is; I've said it over and over again.  I believe in the red light cameras, I don't want to do this.  But I have every intention of doing it and I'm doing my best to get this done," said Parker.

And even if Parker turns the cameras back off, anti red-light camera activist Michael Kubosh says that he will mobilize the more than 180,000 people who voted to kick the cameras out of Houston to keep the mayor from getting re-elected.

"We're going to be putting together a lot of no parker signs that look like no parking signs.  We're going to be putting shirts together, we're going to start a rally to get rid of this mayor," says Kubosh.

But will his efforts actually be a success?  Political Science Professor Bob Stein with Rice University says… possibly.

"What's happened is that these issues; the drainage fee and its charge, the red light camera and its renewal hurt her in a very key constituency -- African Americans," says Stein.

Meanwhile the Mayor's campaign spokesperson, Sue Davis, thinks that voters will side with Parker in the end.

"The voters really respect Annise Parker for making the tough decisions whether they are politically popular or not," says Davis.

Currently there are only two candidates challenging the Mayor for office: Deputy Houston Fire Chief Fernando Herrera http://electfernandoherrera.com/ and business owner Dr. Kevin Simms http://www.drkevinsimms.org.
