Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - City hall has scrapped the option to install 50 red light cameras in Syracuse. The decision comes just two weeks after temporary cameras were placed at a handful of intersections throughout the city.

City officials say the main reason they've decided against the cameras is safety. The city took into consideration the data collected during a week-long trial, as well as accident information from the Syracuse Police Department.

Ultimately, the committee did not feel red light cameras would make the city safer.

"Looking at how many serious accidents we have in the City of Syracuse, where there was serious injury or fatalities in a T-bone crash, there's fortunately not a great deal," Director of Administration Bill Ryan says.

Without that real threat, Ryan believes proceeding with the technology would seem like a money grab.

"And that was not something we wanted to be a part of," he says.

Even so, Ryan says there's no guarantee that the city would have received any money. Other places with red light cameras have had a hard time collecting on tickets. The cameras catch the car and the license plate, but there is difficulty in proving who is driving.

"And judges increasing across the country have said to the municipalities, "If you can't prove the driver, I'm going to throw the ticket out,'" Ryan says.

In 2009, the state gave Syracuse the go-ahead to install 50 red light cameras. This past year, the city reviewed proposals from four different companies.
