MT. JULIET, Tenn. - Mt. Juliet commissioners voted against renewing the contract for the city's traffic cameras.

On Monday night, commissioners passed a resolution that will inform the Arizona company that runs the cameras that the city doesn't plan to renew its contract.

One commissioner said he has received a lot of calls about problems.

"By far, most of it was turning right on red, not coming to a complete stop. The law says you have to come to a complete and full stop, but it doesn't say how long you have to stop. It just says you have to stop," said Mt. Juliet Commissioner James Maness.

Commissioners said the city get less than one-third of the revenue from the tickets. Most of the money goes to the camera company.

"We're sending about two-thirds of that tax dollars, or what could be tax dollars sent don the city, out to Arizona," added Maness.

Commissioner Maness said if a local company wanted to present the city with a camera system that the commission may reconsider a camera system.

"But we have to make sure too, we're actually focusing on safety and not generating revenue for the camera companies," Maness said.

The traffic cameras will still be in place until their contract runs out in 2013.
