Camera Petition

Backers of the petition to put Longview’s red light cameras in front of voters claim that they have enough signatures to get that issue on the ballot, delivering those petitions to the Longview City Clerk this morning. “Ban-Cam” backer Mike Wallin says that people have been eager to weigh in on this issue. Along with Josh and Tim Sutinen, Wallin presented petitions containing 3,628 signatures, and he says that they’re confident those will contain at least 2,766 valid signatures for “Longview Initiative #1.” Wallin claims that the Clerk will have three working days to transmit the petitions to the County Auditor, who will then review and determine the validity of the signatures. If the petitions are certified, then they’ll be returned to the City Clerk. If the petitions are validated, Wallin says that the City Council will have two options; one is to reconsider the ordinance that allows red light cameras in the city, the other is to put the ordinance to a vote of the people. As proposed, backers of “Longview Initiative Number 1″ say the measure would repeal “government-imposed” automatic ticketing cameras in the city, would require the city government to get voter approval if they try again, would remove the “profit motive” by limiting fines, and would protect democracy and due process.
