HOUSTON - The Houston City Council voted Wednesday morning to turn off all of the city's red light cameras.
They also repealed the ordinance that allowed the cameras to be installed in the first place.
The resolution orders "All devices, equipment, cameras, software, and related apparatus known as red light cameras shall be removed immediately from all city rights of ways, traffic signals, posts, and poles and/or other public locations."
By repealing the ordinance that allows the cameras, the council's vote essentially made the cameras illegal.
The vote follows an proposed compromise by the company that provides the cameras, American Traffic Solutions. ATS on Tuesday proposed that the cameras remain on until December 31, 2013 so that the city could avoid possible legal trouble over the city's contract with ATS.
