Post of interest:

...traffic accidents are down 16% at those intersections according to the Houston Chronicle.

Can we drop the pretense that these things are anything other than automated tax revenue generators please?!

Post two:

Yes, the voters approved the change in law disallowing red light cameras in November.

The article goes on to say that accidents decreased at 32 intersections, increased at 21 and stayed the same at 17. I am trying to find a link to chron.com for the article but it appears it's not up yet.

It is interesting to note that while the cameras aren't being used to create citations, they are apparently still monitoring the intersections. The company doing the monitoring warned HPD that there were increasing numbers of drivers running red lights...but accidents went down?

Accidents fall at Houston red-light camera intersections
In the five months after Houston voters forced city officials to turn off a multi-million dollar camera surveillance system that fined motorists for running red lights, traffic accidents at those 50 intersections have decreased 16.4 percent, according to records released to the Houston Chronicle. (Read the full story in today’s print edition or E-Edition of the Houston Chronicle, or Wednesday on chron.com.)

See details for 70 cameras at the 50 intersections.
