Driving while deceased? Lieberman's sis gets dreaded red light camera ticket 3 months after she dies

Brittany Wallman South Florida Sun-Sentinel

If you get a ticket for running a red light and are looking for ways to get out of paying it, don't try "I died three months ago.'' That won't work.

Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman said her sister died May 19 and got one of the unpopular red-light-camera tickets in August.

That's how Lieberman found out there are only a few excuses that a person can use to get a ticket dismissed, and being deceased is not one of them.

"The car gets the ticket, not the driver,'' explained Michael McAllister of American Traffic Solutions (ATS) Inc., which has cameras all over South Florida, including in the Miami Gardens intersection in question.

(Ban the Cams note:  WHAT A GARBAGE ANSWER!  CLEARLY this lady didn't do it, but than what do you expect from a company that cited a funeral procession under police escort in Opa Locka! http://www.wsvn.com/features/articles/helpmehoward/MI92368/)

Lieberman said the family had turned in the car tag and canceled the registration, so the ticketing was clearly a snafu. She wants state law changed to add death to the list of ticketing exceptions.

For now, though, someone's got to pay that ticket or go to court.
