ATLANTA, Ga. - For more than a year, the city of Atlanta failed to follow a state order to remove one of its red light photo intersections. When asked about the disputed site on Piedmont Road, a top city official promised to remove all signage and hardware within five days.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says the cameras at Piedmont Road and Monroe Street, just north of Piedmont Park, have been deactivated, but the city never removed the camera equipment or the signs from the intersection—leaving the impression they were still operational.

GDOT permits red light cameras at intersections based on specific traffic data, including accident information. They say the intersection of Piedmont and Monroe did not meet their requirements to have cameras in place.

GDOT also says that while they ordered the cameras deactivated in early 2010, the city continued tagging motorists with tickets. There’s no word on exactly how much money was collected after the cameras should have come down.

Richard Mendoza of the Department of Public Works told FOX 5 that the signs were removed recently. He says they should have been taken down in 2010, but they were missed because of a miscommunication between departments.

The city of Atlanta says they have tracked down all of the drivers who received tickets from the cameras when they shouldn't have, and offered them refunds.  The chief judge tells FOX 5 just like any other ticket, if you believe you've received it incorrectly, you can challenge your ticket in court.
