2 Red Light Cameras May be Removed

ATLANTA (MyFOX ATLANTA) - An Atlanta city councilman said two red light cameras intersections in Atlanta may be dangerous. Under orders from the state, those red light cameras are coming down and the city must forfeit tens of thousands of dollars collected in fines.

The red light cameras at the intersections of Freedom Parkway and Boulevard and Piedmont Road and Monroe Drive have come under scrutiny.

The lights were installed at intersections based on crash data. The city of Atlanta submitted those intersections for lights, but the state turned them down.

The DOT has asked that the lights be removed and the money from fines be returned.

Now the city may lose $35,000 it collected in fines from the cameras. City council members said arrangements could be made with the Department of Transportation to get the money back. But the state says the city should turn the funds over to the general fund.
