Lawmakers look to voters to weigh in on red light cameras

Albuquerque city councilors voted Monday to let the voters weigh in on the future of red light cameras, although their votes may not make as much as an impact as one would think.
Councilors agreed to add the red light camera program to the October ballot.
The cameras were turned off earlier this year, but last month, the council voted to extend the contract with operator Redflex through 2012.
Even though the public will get to vote on the future of red light cameras in Albuquerque, city councilors are meeting with lawyers to see if that vote can act as more of a survey than a final decision.
Many members say they will look to those votes to see how the public feels about the program.
If lawyers agree councilors don't have to side with voters, the council could still have the final say if the red light cameras stay or go within city limits.
