Red Light Camera Question to go to Voters

Albuquerque-Mayor Richard J. Berry announced today he will allow the question of whether to keep the Red Light Camera Program to appear on the ballot of the City's municipal election on October 4, 2011.

The City Council voted at its June 20th meeting to put the question to vote.

It is important to note that while voters have the opportunity to vote on the question, voters will not cast the deciding vote on whether the cameras stay or go.

A City Council cannot pass decisions they are legally required to make onto the voters.

The question that will appear on the ballot should be treated as a survey of how voters in Albuquerque feel about the issue.

Only the City Council and Mayor have the legal authority to make decisions on important public safety policy.

Red Light Cameras in Albuquerque

Is there an organization putting up a campaign against Red Light Cameras here in Albuquerque? I haven't seen evidence of one. There is a poll(push poll?) by an organization called Safe Streets Albuquerque being taken on the issue; I suspect that is pro Red Light Cameras.
