Auto Club AAA is calling on Gov. Charlie Crist to veto legislation allowing communities to use red light cameras to enforce the law, saying the fine revenue doesn't do enough to promote safety.
"The fact that only 10 percent of the fine revenue is to be used for public safety and health purposes clearly shows that this legislation was more about raising money than improving traffic safety," said AAA Auto Club South Senior Vice President Kevin Bakewell.
AAA also objects to the fact that owners of vehicles may receive tickets for red light running violations by others driving their car, and that the automatic issuance of a traffic ticket presumes guilt, proving the owner to prove their innocence.
Among other issues cited by the AAA: the measure doesn't define "traffic infraction enforcement officer," which the auto club says leaves open the possibility that employees of the camera vendor might be used to make ticket decisions.
