Mar 28, 2010 (Carroll Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --

Start your engines: Sykesville voters will get the chance to say "yes" or "no" on the issue of speed cameras in their town.

On March 22, Sykesville's mayor and Town Council voted, 6-0, to schedule a referendum on the town's speed camera ordinance -- Ordinance No. 271 "Speed Monitoring Systems." The election will be May 4 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Town House, 7547 Main St., in Sykesville. The election is a result of resident Chris Martin collecting 401 petition signatures from town voters and delivering them to the town March 14, thus forcing a referendum on the speed camera measure.

The town's charter provides that an ordinance be brought to a town-wide vote when 15 percent of town voter signatures are collected within 20 days of the ordinance's passage.

Town Manager Matt Candland said the town had at least two options for a special election -- either in 2011, during the town's next municipal election, or a date this year of the council's choosing.

The May 4 date, the first Tuesday in May, follows the town's traditional date for elections.

The mayor and council voted, 5-1, Feb. 22 to approve the speed camera ordinance and establish three school zones in town for the cameras to be used. The cameras would be in school zones around Ava Wanas Montessori School, Stepping Stones Pre-School at Springfield Presbyterian Church and at Sykesville Middle School.
Town Attorney Dennis Hoover will be charged with formulating the ballot question asking voters if they want to repeal the ordinance, Candland said.
Mayor Mike Miller said officials are also pondering whether they also want to use the special ballot to ask other questions -- as a sort of survey on some town issues. The proposed questions have not been released.
