Among the more than http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/BillLookup/Amendments.aspx?LegSess=82R&Bill=SB1420 100 amendments considered on the Texas Department of Transportation Sunset bill is a little-noticed provision that deals with the most heated of issues: red-light cameras.

If approved, the measure by Rep. Pete Gallego, D-Alpine, would  http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/tlodocs/82R/amendments/html/SB01420H274.HTM prohibit the installation of red-light cameras on state highways --- unless the state grants permission. The House approved the provision amid a flurry of amendments to the bill on April 29.

The cameras, of course, have long http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-news/dallas/headlines/20100705-Red-light-cameras-spark-debate-in-6029.ece sparked debate in Texas and beyond. The Texas Municipal League, which opposes the provision, has tried to draw  http://www.tml.org/leg_updates/legis_update052011b_bills_of_interest.asp new attention to it in the session's final days.

The TxDOT sunset legislation, Senate Bill 1420, is currently being hashed out in a conference committee. Will the red-light camera provision remain? Stay tuned.
