Red light camera

The City Council bill to get rid of Albuquerque's red light cameras is getting its first hearing Monday evening.

The council's Financial Committee will take a look at the legislation that would repeal the law that allows the city to operate the controversial camera system.

If all goes as planned, the bill's sponsor expects the committee to move the bill forward to a vote by the full council November 7.

If the bill passes, the red light cameras would come down within 60 days, putting an end to photographs and fines.

"Nothing is over till it's over…until there's a final vote by the council. But I do believe that the council will listen to what I believe is the will of the voters and make that decision to end the program," said City Councilor Dan Lewis.

City voters rejected the red light cameras in a regular municipal election last week. It was a non-binding, advisory vote.

Two councilors told KOB Eyewitness News 4 they will vote to keep the cameras, but Councilor Lewis said he expects a majority to vote with him to dump them
