LAKELAND | The city of Lakeland and ATS, the provider of red light cameras, are close to settling a class action lawsuit that challenged the constitutionality of the cameras.

In the proposed settlement, the city would pay $663,000, while ATS would pay claimants $203,000.

Each person involved in the lawsuit would receive about $25 to $30.

The money the city would pay comes from the $1.2 million the city had set aside for lawsuit settlements.

Commissioners will vote on the proposed settlement on Monday.

The lawsuit was filed in 2010 before the state passed a law to allow red light cameras.

The city's use of red-light cameras has been challenged in at least four lawsuits.

"This is one down," City Manager Doug Thomas said this morning during an agenda study meeting. "It's the big one."
